City Responding to Temporary Loss of Power at O. N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX—On Saturday, April 5, an AEP Texas transmission line that powers the O.N. Stevens Water Treatment Plant failed, temporarily causing a loss of water pressure in the Calallen area. The staff at the water treatment plant were able to switch to a secondary line within minutes.
To comply with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) requirements and out of an abundance of caution, the City is proactively flushing water from fire hydrants in the Calallen area, and water sampling is underway. This will continue over the next several days.
The City was informed today by AEP Texas that a bird’s nest caused the power outage.
As part of the FY 2025 Capital Budget, the City is in the design phase for $8M in electrical upgrades at the plant to minimize the risk of future electrical disruptions.
The City will continue monitoring water quality closely and responding to questions as they arise.
CCW is recognized as a Superior Rated Public Water System by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the highest rating a public water system can achieve in Texas.
