City of Corpus Christi Receives Coast Guard City Designation

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi is proud to announce its official designation as a Coast Guard City, a distinguished honor recognizing the community’s exceptional dedication and support for the men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard and their families. This significant recognition was bestowed by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, with the formal approval of the United States Congress.

Corpus Christi earned this recognition through its deep-rooted, 45-year relationship with the local Coast Guard, marked by active support for service members and their families, a strong history of honoring the Coast Guard through dedicated events and memorials, and a steadfast commitment to their well-being and morale.

Since the Coast Guard’s full operational establishment in Corpus Christi, a strong bond of collaboration and cooperation has flourished between the community and the service for over four decades. This partnership is evident in joint professional missions with the Corpus Christi Police and Fire Departments, safety training initiatives with the Port of Corpus Christi, and the Coast Guard Air Sector relocation to the Corpus Christi International Airport.

The community’s deep appreciation for the Coast Guard is further demonstrated through initiatives such as the only Coast Guard JROTC program in Texas at Veterans Memorial High School, the annual Military Appreciation Dove Hunt, and collaborative participation in community events like Community Days and the solemn CG123 Remembrance Ceremony.

“Corpus Christi is honored to be named the first Coast Guard City in Texas, joining just 34 cities nationwide with this recognition, U.S. Rep. Michael Cloud said. “As the only Coast Guard City in Texas, this designation reflects our city’s long support for the U.S. Coast Guard and the pivotal role they play in protecting our nation’s coastline. From the bustling Port of Corpus Christi, the largest energy port in the nation, to the many critical missions carried out by Sector Corpus Christi and Air Station Corpus Christi, the Coast Guard is a huge part of what defines us as a community. This honor deeply reflects Corpus Christi’s unwavering support for the Coast Guard and is a proud testament to our city’s commitment to serve those who serve and protect our nation.”

“Corpus Christi is deeply honored to be awarded the prestigious designation of Coast Guard City,” Mayor Paulette Guajardo said. “This recognition is a powerful testament to the commitment our entire community has shown in supporting the brave men and women of the United States Coast Guard. Their role in ensuring the safety and security of our coastal city is immeasurable, from their tireless efforts in search and rescue to safeguarding our ports and waterways, ensuring marine safety, and their crucial work in drug and migrant interdiction.”

Looking ahead, this Coast Guard City designation, which lasts for five years with the possibility of recertification, will further solidify the bond between Corpus Christi and the Coast Guard. The City, in partnership with the Coast Guard and other community organizations, will host a special event later this year to celebrate this milestone and the strong community relationships that have made it possible. This event will serve as an opportunity to further strengthen these ties and recognize the Coast Guard’s invaluable contributions to the region.
