City of Sugar Land Announces New Ribbon Cutting Date for Mayfield Park Mural Project

The City of Sugar Land Civic Arts Division is excited to announce the rescheduled ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Mayfield Park basketball court mural, now set for Friday, March 7, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at Mayfield Park.

This celebration will be bigger than ever, featuring a performance by the award-winning dance company, Urban Souls, an art exhibition, an all-Black vendor market, music, and family-friendly activities.

The City invites residents, community members, and art lovers to celebrate the completion of this major dedication to the Mayfield Park community. The mural, designed and painted by award-winning local artist Alex Arzu, is the result of a deep collaboration between the artist, residents of Mayfield Park, and the Sugar Land Civic Arts Division. This vibrant public artwork reflects the neighborhood’s rich history, culture, and sense of unity.

Following brief remarks and photos with City Council and the Mayfield Park Liaison Group, attendees can enjoy an afternoon of live entertainment, children’s activities, delicious food options, and local Black-owned businesses showcasing their goods and services. As well as the exhibition of our Artist in Residence, Bevin Biggers, of her piece called “Roots”.

Why the Schedule Change?

Since the week of January 28, 2025, continuous rain and high humidity have caused delays in the mural’s completion, resulting in multiple lost workdays and extended drying times between rainfalls. The combination of cold temperatures, moisture buildup, and necessary re-cleaning of the court after each storm has made it difficult to proceed without compromising the quality and longevity of the artwork. With additional rain and freezing temperatures in the forecast, the project timeline has been adjusted to ensure the mural is completed to the highest standards.

The City of Sugar Land appreciates the community’s patience and enthusiasm as we work to bring this meaningful project to life. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you on March 7!
