It’s Official: Introducing Mayor Charles Johnson

History was made as former City Councilman Charles Johnson took the oath of office, officially becoming Baytown’s newest mayor. While the event marked the beginning of his official duties, a public ceremony will take place January 23 at the Baytown Community Center.

Reflecting on his journey, Mayor Johnson said, “My number one priority is to serve. I was elected to represent everyone and that’s what I want to do.”

For Johnson, the dream of becoming mayor started years ago, long before his time on city council.

“The dream has been fulfilled and I’m happy. Now that I’ve been sworn in, it’s time to get to work,” he said.

In addition to fulfilling an ambition, Mayor Johnson also made history as Baytown’s first black mayor.

He said, “It’s an honor and a privilege. That part didn’t hit me until people mentioned that kids would be writing book reports about me. Being mayor means different things to different people, and that’s humbling to realize.”

Until the ceremony on January 23, Mayor Johnson will focus on settling into his new role and responsibilities.

“It’s time to continue what I was doing when I was on council, which was listening to residents and finding solutions,” he said.

Johnson also shared a message for those wanting immediate action on a day one, saying, “Time and change are two constants in this world. You can’t have one without the other. It takes time to bring about change, so be patient- but I’m ready to go.”
