Nikolas Motta defeats Maheshate by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Nikolas Motta opened the UFC’s return to Macau with an upset, collecting a unanimous decision win over Maheshate.

Motta, who earned his contract with a victory on Season 4 of Dana White’s Contender Series, ate a couple knees early, but wore them well, eventually settling into his timing and range to sting his 24-year-old Chinese opponent with sharp left hands. Though he dropped Maheshate early in the third and worked to back mount, Motta was unable to finish, but clearly did more than enough to collect the victory.

All three judges saw the fight in favor of the Brazilian, who picked up his second upset win of the year after stopping Tom Nolan back in January. Now 3-1 with one no contest over his last five outings, Motta has established himself as a consistent all-action talent in the lightweight division.

Xiao Long defeats Quang Le by KO (strikes) at 1:28 of Round 3

Xiao Long got the crowd at Galaxy Arena in Macau on their feet with a third-round knockout win over Quang Le.After a pair of ultra-competitive and entertaining rounds, Xiao put a clean right hand on the chin of the tiring Le, sending him tumbling backwards to the canvas. Xiao followed him to the mat and smashed home the finishing blows before scaling the Octagon fence and celebrating his first UFC victory.

Xiao landed on the wrong side of a split decision verdict in his Road to UFC Season 2 finale appearance earlier this year, but rebounded in a big way here, collecting the first win of the night for Chinese fighters. The 26-year-old is an absolute berserker, and should be a fun addition to the 135-pound ranks.

Lone’er Kavanagh defeats Jose Ochoa by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Lone’er Kavanagh and Jose Ochoa paired off in a fun clash of flyweight prospects early in the night in Macau. For the first nine minutes of the contest, Kavanagh was in control, using his deft defensive movements and quick attacks to get the better of the exchanges, only to have Ochoa have tremendous success in the final minute of the second, tightening things up. The third was nip-tuck as well, with Kavanagh having a little more success with his kicks and counters, with both men happy with their efforts when the final horn sounded.

When the scorecards were totalled up, it was Kavanagh that emerged victorious, preserving his undefeated record. This was a quality win for the GB Top Team representative, but also a strong showing in defeat for Ochoa, who will undoubtedly be heard from further in the future as well.

Carlos Hernandez defeats Nyamjargal Tumendemberel by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Carlos Hernandez leaned on his grappling advantage to halt a two-fight slide and register a unanimous decision win over Nyamjargal Tumendemberel in Saturday’s second of three flyweight fixtures.

The Chicagoland product was able to get his Mongolian counterpart to the canvas with relative ease in the first and second, working to dominant positions, but never getting too close to finding a finish. Tumendemberel dropped Hernandez in the first with a short left hand in the midst of a scramble, but for the most part, the promotional newcomer was too limited in his output to counter the effective wrestling of Hernandez.

The judges were called upon to determine the victor and when the cards were collected, totalled, and read aloud, it was Hernandez that came out ahead. After dropping his first fight of the year and losing three of his past four, this was a solid effort to close out the year and get things moving in the right direction for the Valle Flow Striking representative.

Shi Ming defeats Feng Xiaocan by KO (head kick) at 0:46 of Round 3

Shi Ming snatched a UFC contract in spectacular fashion in the Road to UFC strawweight finale, putting Feng Xiaocan to sleep with a thudding head kick early in the third round.

Likely down two rounds, Shi feinted a level change and fired high, putting her right shin across the neck and jaw line of Feng with force, sending her young opponent crashing to the canvas in an unconscious heap, instantly halting the action.

This was an outstanding finish in a massive moment for 30-year-old Shi, a practicing doctor who has now earned five straight victories. With the win, Shi becomes the first female tournament winner in Road to UFC history, and earns a place on the UFC roster.

DongHun Choi defeats Kiru Sahota by KO (right hook) at 2:36 of Round 1

DongHun Choi maintained his unbeaten record and punched his ticket to the UFC with a first-round knockout win over Kiru Sahota.

Despite a considerable size disadvantage, Choi was able to get inside and find Sahota’s chin more than once, stinging him early before putting him on the deck with a right hook. Follow-up blows were unnecessary, allowing Choi to erupt in celebration as he collected the biggest win of his career.

Choi said he wanted to be in the UFC in order to chase fame, success, and find a wife, and if he keeps delivering performances like this one, the first two are all but assured.

SuYoung You defeats Baergeng Jieleysi by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

SuYoung You won the bantamweight Road to UFC tournament to wrap up Saturday’s prelims, getting the better of Baergeng Jieleyisi both standing and on the canvas.

Expected to be at a disadvantage on the feet, You was the more effective of the two in the limited striking exchanges, mixing up his weapons and his targets throughout to keep Jieleyisi off balance. And when he looked to grapple, the South Korean was clearly superior, putting his Chinese foe on the deck with relative ease and advancing positions.

After the consecutive highlight reel finishes to the first two tournament finales, this was a little more methodical and tactical, but a great win for You nonetheless. With the win, the 28-year-old moves to 14-2 with two no contests verdicts in his career, and claims a place on the bantamweight roster.
